Ryan and Jazz had been friends for around eight years when fate, in the form of a
Covid lockdown, stepped in and brought them together in the most unexpected way.
Things moved quickly, and by the end of 2023 they had purchased what would
become Kaitahi. They share a lot in common, including a love for food, wine, and
family, not necessarily in that order.
Raised by the Land
Both were raised in rural New Zealand; farm life runs deep in their veins. They grew
up on a steady diet of beef and lamb, and their food philosophy was simple: eat what
you’re given, no questions asked.
From Restaurant to Retreat
Ryan’s passion for cooking began young. Growing up in Hunterville, he loved cooking for his family on weekends. At sixteen he started his journey as a chef, and by twenty-one he had opened his own restaurant. While many his age were chasing nightlife, Ryan was building Table 188, which he ran for thirteen years as a testament to his dedication and craft.
By early 2024, with the hospitality industry changing and creativity limited by the traditional restaurant model, he knew it was time for something new. The idea was clear: a lodge in the Manawatū that combined great food, great wine, and beautiful accommodation; everything he and Jazz loved. It felt like the perfect fit, and so, Kaitahi was born.
Homegrown perspective
Jazz’s background in marketing and her experience growing the business she co-
founded across New Zealand gave her the skills, perspective, and confidence to help
bring this vision to life. She grew up near Pātea in South Taranaki and has spent
most of her life in Manawatū, which she now proudly calls home. Being raised on a
farm gave her a deep connection to the whenua and an appreciation for the beauty
of Aotearoa.
Life at Kaitahi
Ryan is often found in the kitchen cooking three meals a day, and while Jazz feels
incredibly lucky to have a personal chef, she laughs that “he has never so much as
touched the washing machine”. The biggest lessons, however, come from raising
Miss Madi, and learning to balance family life with the rhythm of the lodge.
